Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago on a 147-acre campus, offers primary, extended and specialty care and serves as a tertiary care referral center for VISN 12. Specialized clinical programs include Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy and Cardiovascular Surgery.
Hines VAH currently operates 471 beds and six community based outpatient clinics in Kankakee, Elgin, Oak Lawn, Aurora, LaSalle, and Joliet. Over 600,000 patient visits occurred in fiscal year 2010 providing care to over 54,000 veterans, primarily from Cook, DuPage and Will counties.
Hines VAH is affiliated with 70 colleges and universities and 40 associated health professions. The main medical school affiliation is the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University of Chicago. There are over 1,300 students educated annually at Hines.

DUTIES:
The Surgical Service at the Hines VA Hospital is looking to hire a part-time (20 hours per week) Nurse Anesthetist.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Call will be included and shift will be predominately 7:00am -5:30pm.
DUTIES:
As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist you will deliver comprehensive anesthesia care in the pre-anesthetic, pre-operative and intra-operative, and post-operative periods.
Pre-anesthetic Evaluation includes obtaining an appropriate health history, conducting an appropriate physical exam, selecting, obtaining, ordering and administering pre-anesthetic medication, and obtaining informed consent for anesthesia, anesthesia induction, maintenance, and emergence.
Pre-operative and Intra-operative Care, includes Operating Rooms and Out of Operating Room procedures such as obtaining, preparing and using all equipment, monitors, supplies and drugs for the administration of anesthesia, performing and ordering safety checks as needed, selecting, obtaining, or administrating the anesthetics (General, MAC, Regional), adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids and blood products as necessary to manage the anesthetic performing all aspects of airway management, performing BLS/ACLS management, and recognizing abnormal patient responses during anesthesia, selecting and implementing appropriate corrective action and requesting consultation from the assigned supervising attending anesthesiologist as needed
Post-operative Care may include providing post anesthesia follow-up and evaluation of the patientÂ's response to anesthesia and surgical experience and notifying the attending anesthesiologist as needed and selecting and prescribing medication, and writing postoperative orders related to the care of the patient as necessary, in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be proficient in spoken and written English. Nurse Anesthetists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook, Part II, Chapter 2, Section D, and Paragraph 5a.
- Must have a degree in nursing from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration and the possession of a Certificate from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- Must be a graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at the time the program was completed.
- Must possess a current, full, active and unrestricted license as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or the District of Columbia. The nurse anesthetist must maintain a current, full and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA.
- Must be certified by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.
