Surgical Technologists receive recognition through their involvement through the Clinical Ladder program, Professional Surgical Technology. Surgical Technologist practice follows the mission of the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis serving our community with the “greatest care and love”.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

:

1.

The job incumbent is required to demonstrate the knowled! ge and skills necessary to scrub for cases appropriate to the ! age of the patients served intra-operatively.

This requires that the incumbent demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

Scrubs for procedures according to established aseptic technique guidelines.

Procedures include but are not limited to pediatrics, thoracic, transplant, organ procurement, vascular, interventional radiology, orthopedics, gynecology, robotic, EENT, plastics, dental, urology, oncology, laser, and trauma.

Possesses analytical skills necessary to organize and prepare the operating room prior to surgery.

In doing so, collects all necessary supplies, instruments, implants, hardware, opens and maintains sterile environment, sets up back table and mayo stand, counts all necessary items according to procedure.

Assists surgeons intra-operatively with routine and complex surgical procedures including scrubbing, draping, passing instruments, sponges, sutures, and other s! upplies and equipment to surgeons, holding retractors, first assisting, assisting in clean-up after a case, sterilizing instruments in preparation for a case or contaminated instruments, etc.

Anticipates and responds to the surgeons’ needs during the course of the surgery.

Receives surgical specimens, preserves specimen accordingly and notifies circulating nurse of the specimen type and source.

2.

Work requires a professional level of knowledge of anatomy and physiology, concepts of disease, aseptic technique, modern surgical principles, techniques, and procedures, at a level that generally can be acquired by completion and graduation from an accredited surgical technology program.

3.

Work requires a minimum of four months intra-operative orientation and on-the-job training to learn department/unit policies, procedures and work routines; to develop proficiency in the use of medical equipment and! instruments used in the operating room; to learn quality/safety standa! rds; and to gain an understanding of the types of surgical procedures, including traumas.

Further team specific orientation may require additional education and on-the â€"job training.

4.

Work requires the interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively and concisely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other patient care providers.

5.

Functions as a clinical resource person to various department personnel and other patient care givers assigned, including other surgical technologists, nurses, residents, and medical students.

Assists in identifying and resolving clinical and operational problems that may inhibit the quality of patient care.
