Location: Chicago, Illinois

Essential Functions:PROTOCOLS/PROCEDURES/STANDING ORDERS:
1. In accordance with Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) Standards and Guidelines and federal, state, and local laws, issues Standing Orders delineating parameters for medical care provided by other professionals employed by or under contract with Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL).
2. In accordance with PPFA Standards and Guidelines, provide for the drafting, implementation, and monitoring of PPIL medical protocols and procedures.

MEDICAL STAFF SUPERVISION:
3. Provide for the recruiting, training, and medical supervision and evaluation of PPIL clinicians including Associate Medical Director (clinical issues only), physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, physician's assistants, CRNAs, and others.
4. In collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer, review and evaluate the agency's program of medical quality assurance; evaluate medical occ! urrences reported to PPFA.

PATIENT CARE:
5. Provide oversight of the following programs: abortion, family planning, IUD insertion, contraceptive implant insertion and removal, male and female sterilization, gynecology, colposcopy, and LEEP services. Supervise provision of other surgical services, including abortion, post-abortion exam, re-evacuation, and complication management; provide back-up/on-call accessibility when not on-site at PPIL.
6. Provide and supervise direct medical care including abortion (including rechecks, re-evacuation, and complication management), family planning, IUD insertion, contraceptive implant insertion and removal, male and female sterilization, gynecology, colposcopy/cryotherapy, LEEP services.
7. During absences, provide for substitute 24-hour emergency consultation and care of all PPIL patients.
8. Collaborate with the VP of Patient Service on efforts to plan, implement, administer, and evaluate PPIL’s medical services to maximize both cost-effectiveness and the! patient experience.

Other Responsibilities:
1. Undertake such other activities necessary to promote the furtherance of the goals of PPIL.
2. In accordance with PPFA Standards and Guidelines and federal, state, and local laws, issue Medical Standards and Guidelines delegating and designating services to be provided, drugs to be distributed/prescribed (including the general handling of pharmaceuticals), and devices to be used by other professionals employed by or under contract with PPIL.
3. Provide for the recruiting, training, privileging, and medical supervision and evaluation of the physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, physician's assistants, certified registered nurse anesthetists and others who serve as clinicians in PPIL health centers. Serve as collaborating physician for advance practice nurses. Provide documentation that all competency requirements are met for other staff, including, but not limited to, those who perform ultr! asound and colposcopy.
4. Complete Medical Director's statement on ! occurrence reports as required by PPFA.
5. Serve as laboratory director for one or more laboratories for CLIA purposes.
6. Provide on-site "problem clinics" at PPIL sites as needed for the purposes of:

  • clinical assessment of patients requiring M.D. referral;
  • hands-on supervision and evaluation of clinical staff; and
  • provision of routine medical chart audit in accordance with PPFA Standards and Guidelines and PPIL protocols and procedures.
7. Provide back-up/on-call medical counsel and care for family planning, gynecological, and surgical care patients.
8. Notify PPIL of any change in status as a physician, licensure, accreditation, involvement in litigation, or hospital privileges.
9. Maintain admitting privileges at a hospital acceptable to PPIL.
10. Maintain credentialing as a Medicaid provider and with PPIL contracted insurers.
11. As requested by the CEO, represent PPIL before groups such as medical socie! ties, governmental hearings, etc.
12. Through these activities demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to PPIL core values of access, activism, care, confidentiality, diversity, excellence, integrity, respect, self-determination, and stewardship; practice these values in relations with internal and external customers.
13. Other duties as specified.

Status: Full time, exempt from the overtime provisions of wage and salary regulations.

Grade: 2

Qualifications:
Education: Medical degree, with training and experience in reproductive health care; must maintain status as physician licensed to practice medicine in Illinois, DEA licenses and ACLS certified.

Professional and Personal Qualities: Commitment to the efficient and customer-oriented provision of services, as well as commitment to the operating goals of Planned Parenthood of Illinois.

Neither PPFA nor PPIL shall unreasonably exercise control, direct, or interfere with the Medical Director’s exercise and execution of his/her professional judgment in a manner that may adversely affect his/her ability to provide quality care to patients.
