To assist anesthesiologists in caring for surgical patients.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential functions

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the! mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.
To prepare anesthesia machines and equipment necessary for surgical procedures according to the appropriate checklists, the preferences of the anesthesiologist, and the type of anesthetic procedure planned. To assist the anesthesiologist with patient care by helping move the patient, applying monitors, and performing other duties as requested and supervised by the anesthesiologist. To assist the anesthesia technician in assuring adequacy of anesthesia-related supplies in the operating rooms. To perform assigned duties without requiring constant supervision.

Learns the names of the various anesthesia-related machines, monitors, and instruments, their location, their uses, their safety checklists, their setup and cleaning procedures.

1.1 Drager anesthesia gas machine setup and safety check

1.2 Dat! ex and Marquette patient monitor setup and transducer setup
1..3 Anesthesia cart contents location and use

1.4 Fiberoptic bronchoscope setup and cleaning (including leak test)

1.5 Site-Rite setup and battery change

1.6 Vasotrac setup and calibration

1.7 Propaq setup and calibration

1.8 Infusion pump setup

1.9 Swan-Ganz catheter setup and calibration

1.10 Specialty endotracheal tubes and airways (eg. Double lumen tubes, univent bronchial blockers, reinforced endotracheal tubes, RAE oral and nasal tubes, pediatric tubes, laryngeal mask airways, Ovassapian airways, bite blocks, tube exchangers)

1.11 Laryngoscope and blade checkout and cleaning

1.12 Hemocue calibration and use

1.13 Glucose monitor calibration and use

1.14 Bair Hugger setup and use

1.15 Blood/ fluid warmer setup and use (Ranger, Level I, Hot Line)

1.16 Stimuplex nerve stimulator and insulated needle location and setup

1.17 Spinal and epidur! al tray and needle location and setup

1.18 Pediatric cart, Latex allergy cart, and EEG/SSEP monitor location

1.19 Transesophageal echo machine and probe basic preparation

Assists the anesthesiologist in the preparation of the patient and operating room for a procedure.

2.1 Prepares all ORs for the first morning cases by turning on and safety checking all appropriate machines, suction, and equipment

2.2 Changes breathing circuit tubing and suction tubing between cases and cleans up sharps and cables

2.3 Sets up appropriate IV solutions and tubing

2.4 Knows the names and location of special IV solutions (eg. Heparinized saline, Hespan, mannitol)

2.5 Obtains Xrays and lab data from the computer at the request of the anesthesiologist

2.6 Able to obtain preoperative vital signs on patients

2.7 Prepares the anesthesiologist-specific supplies in the Operating Room according to preference card! s (eg. Extra towels, blankets, pillows, positioning devices)

2.! 8 Applies EKG electrodes and cables, blood pressure cuff, and pulse oximetry to the patient appropriately

2.9 Connects invasive monitor cables to transducers and calibrates same

Assists the anesthesiologist in the induction of anesthesia and the application of special monitors and devices. Also assists in the insertion of invasive lines and the performance of specific tests and blood unit identification procedures.

3.1 Applies cricoid pressure effectively when asked to do so

3.2 Procures additional equipment (ETT stylet, LMA, fiberoptic bronchoscope, Bair Hugger, Vasotrac, Site Rite, etc.) as needed

3.3 Assists in patient positioning and procurement and preparation of supplies for the insertion of invasive lines (eg. Swan-Ganz, arterial lines, central venous lines)

3.4 Understands basic arrhythmia recognition well enough to report ventricular arrhythmias during central line insertion

3.5 Recognizes and reports o! xygen saturations below 92%

3.6 Sets up IV infusion devices as directed by the anesthesiologist

3.7 Performs Hemocue and Glucometer testing under the supervision of the anesthesiologist

3.8 Performs blood unit identification in conjunction with the anesthesiologist or operating room RN

3.9 Draws blood gases from the arterial line and labels the specimen and tubes it to the lab with the appropriate requisitions when requested to do so

Assists the anesthesiologist in moving the patients to and from the operating room, and positioning patients for procedures.

4.1 Helps push the patients from the preop area to the operating room

4.2 Helps move the patient to the OR table

4.3 Knows how to adjust the position of the OR table

4.4 Helps position the patient for regional or general anesthesia according to the preferences of the anesthesiologist (eg. Lateral, sitting, pillow under the knees, arms out on ! padded armboards)

4.5 Sets up appropriate regional kit/ equipm! ent with gloves, alcohol, Betadine, sponges, etc. as needed

4.6 Helps apply the transport monitors to the patient at the end of the case

4.7 Helps the anesthesiologist push the patient to the appropriate unit at the end of the case

Knows the location of emergency equipment and supplies and remains calm and appropriate during an emergency.

5.1 Knows how to activate the Code button in all operating/recovery areas

5.2 Knows how to call the hospital operator in an emergency

5.3 Knows the location of the nearest crash cart

5.4 Knows the location of the Malignant Hyperthermia cart

5.5 Knows the location of the difficult airway cart

5.6 Is able to perform basic CPR

5.7 Knows how to use the OR intercom and tube system

5.8 Knows the location and use of the nearest fire extinguishers

5.9 Knows the location and use of emergency light sources

5.10 Knows the location and ! use of the OR jet ventilators

5.11 Knows the location of the emergency drug tray in the central core

Reviews the OR schedule before it begins to prioritize cases needing assistance and organize activities for the day. Checks with the on-call anesthesiologist periodically during the day to adjust priorities, if necessary.

6.1 After initial room setups in the morning, prioritizes cases needing extra assistance

6.2 Gives patient care-related activities priority over stocking supplies, equipment cleaning, and breaks

6.3 Checks with on-call anesthesiologist periodically to adjust priorities, if necessary

7. Visits the OB department after morning cases have started to clean up epidural carts and brings fresh drugs to the section room.

7.1 Discards all open drug vials and syringes on epidural carts and locks cart drawers appropriately

7.2 Stores all epidural carts not in use in the designated storage area
!
8. Takes initiative to keep current with new supplies and equipmen! t. Interacts with sales representatives to order new and replacement equipment as needed. Presents one inservice to the department per year. Is productive in use of free time.

9. Fills in for the office coordinator when necessary by entering department charges into the computer.

PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Recognizes the effect of patient age and size on the type of equipment required.

QUALIFICATION/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

Must be a high school graduate, operating room experience preferred.

Must be able to understand, speak, read, and write English.

Excellent customer service skills.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Certification by the Association of Anesthesia Technicians and Technologists preferred.
