Role Purpose:
The role of the Registered Nurse First Assistant is to assist the surgeon with intra-operative procedures, provide direct care to patients using the nursing process pre-operatively, intra-operatively , and post-operatively.
The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the perioperative setting.
Responsibilities:
Plans for patient care by collaborating with health team members to develop, coordinate and implement a perioperative plan of care unique to individual patient needs. Has excellent knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique specific to general surgical procedures to work in collaboration with the surgeon.
Verify patient identity in accordance with hospital policy using patients name and date of birth. Participate in complete and accurate "Time-Outs" prior to induction, incision, and entrance of any additional staff/surgeons 100% of the time. Adheres to all Universal Protocol policies required by Joint Commission including enforcing and verifying site marking prior to entrance to the OR and all other patient safety standards.
Appropriately assists the surgeon accordin g to specialty procedures and physician preference while utilizing sterile technique and universal precautions.
Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques, handles and dissects tissue in collaboration with surgeon.
Sutures muscle,fascia,subcutaneous and skin tissue in collaboration with the surgeon, places drains as surgically indicated, and administers medications per-operatively as directed by the surgeon or anesthesiologist.
Demonstrates fiscal responsibility and proper judgment when opening supplies. Updates and communicates any changes to surgeons preference cards.
Displays problem solving skills and uses critical thinking when making decisions regarding patient care and notifies surgeons of changes to patients condition or any other pertinent information.
Exhibit excellent verbal communication skills and be committed to patient satisfaction 100% of the time and wi ll utilize service recovery skills.
Will retain the ability to be utilized as a scrub or circulator when RNFA duties are not necessary.
Assists in efficiently training and precepting new employees, promote teamwork within the department, and provides assistance to cover call for the department.

Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's Degree in Nursing
Current Illinois RN License
CNOR
Proof of completion of an RNFA approved course
Preferred Qualifications:
3 months to 1 year experience
